FCA FLAMES BAND PROGRAMS
The Family Christian Academy Flames Band holds its mission as educating students in music and in their walk with Christ. The Latin roots for Education mean to "train, mold, or lead out." From this, we draw our overall purpose for our program: “To train and mold” students in how to be great musicians and to “lead out” the gifts God has given them and, more importantly, the “Christ in [them]" (Colossians 1:27).
The Family Christian Academy Flames Band currently has the following band levels available for students:
- 4th Grade Band: This class meets once a week and is made of 4th grade students. Students in this class will develop the fundamental skills of musicianship necessary to be successful as an instrumentalist in future band classes. Students will also learn how to create, perform, and respond to music. As part of the class, students will be asked to choose an instrument from the Brass, Woodwind, or Percussion family that they will begin learning for their second semester of study.
- Beginner Band (5th Hour): This group meets 5 times a week (4 times a week for 5th Grade students). Students in this class consist of 5th and 6th graders. Building on the foundations laid in previous band or music classes, Beginner Band expands musical knowledge and abilities in the areas of performance, theory, history, and composition through the means of performance on woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments and through written and aural exercises. Performance requirements for this group will be the annual Christmas and Spring concerts. In addition, discussions of the purpose of music in our lives primarily as a means by which we express worship to the Lord Jesus Christ will be included in the curriculum. There is also an additional extra-curricular requirement of after school rehearsals once a week on Mondays from 3:25pm-4:45pm.
- Intermediate Band (7th Hour): This band meets 5 times a week. Students in this class consist of 7th and 8th graders. Much like the Beginner Band class, skills of musicianship in the domains of performance, theory, history, and composition will be further progressed through modes of performance on woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments and through written and aural exercises. As well, students will learn the various purposes of music and its primary value as a way of expressing love, gratitude, and honor to Christ. Students will also begin to think critically about music and about its definition and function. Students will perform various concerts throughout the school year, including the Christmas Concert, the Spring Concert, and the LMEA Large Ensemble Assessment at Zachary High School. There are also additional extra-curricular requirements of sectional rehearsals on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:25pm-4:45pm as well as the occasional rehearsals on Wednesdays from 3:25pm-4:15pm.

- Advanced Band (6th Hour): This band meets 5 times a week. Comprising 9th-12th Graders, students in this band will learn to critically think about music, develop their own definition of music, and discuss music's value in worshipping the Lord. As well, students will expand their knowledge of music theory, history, and composition to better inform their expressive music practices of performance on Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion instruments. Students will also be given opportunities in this class to play alternative instruments in alternative ensembles in order to diversify their musical abilities. In addition, students in this class will perform in various concerts including the annual Christmas and Spring concerts and the LMEA Large Ensemble Assessment at Zachary High School. There are also additional extra-curricular requirements of sectional rehearsal on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:25pm-4:45pm as well as the occasional rehearsals on Wednesdays from 3:25pm-4:15pm
Students wanting to be involved with the FCA band programs can choose Band as an elective during the registration process. Students should consider renting the instrument of their choice from Music & Arts at their Baton Rouge and/or Gonzales Locations. Rental instruments range in price from $20-$60 per month depending on the specific instrument and and the condition/quality of the instrument. FCA instruments rentals are also available at a cost of $100 for the entirety of the school year. School instruments are rented out on a first come, first serve basis.
The Family Christian Academy Flames Band prays God's richest blessings on your student in their endeavor of music and all the challenges and growth it will produce.
